Gerhard Heinz – »My brain was always spinning«
Portrait
Private Records is a record label from Berlin founded in 2010 by Janis Nowacki. Everything began with Christian Bruhn’s legendary soundtrack to the animated series »Captain Future«. »That was one of the few releases, which I approached in a completely egoistic way. I absolutely wanted to have the record«. The first official reissue of the sought after soundtrack could have only been a hit and straightaway helped Private Records establish itself as a vinyl specialized reissue label. Classic reissues are nevertheless no more the main concern. Through the contact with musicians, Private Records began to track down, polish, and publish long lost master tapes.
Especially on soundtracks to obscure pornos and horror films, this archaeological touch works out well. In the meantime, Private has taken into their catalogue previously unpublished works by luminaries like Stelio Cipriano, Detto Mariano, Gehrard Heinz or Michael Bundt. On top of that, there are sub-labels for unfindable releases from the times of the New German Wave (NDW), and private pressed Krautrock, as well as Disco rarities and compilations. If you are looking for a common theme amongst this musical microcosm of 70’s Psych-Rock and 80’s Minimal Synth, you will be able to quickly spot it, which is not to be expected considering the large band width of the material. Founder Janis Nowacki wants the cosmic synthesizer sound to remain faithful, to master the balancing act between DJ-compatability and avant-garde. This also applies to a sub-label for new music, on which for example a solo work by Soft-Cell singer Marc Almond is supposed to appear.
Conditions for the label’s mode of practice, which also regularly organises concerts, is naturally a fair relationship between label and artist: »The musicians are pleased about the collaboration and I am happy to give them a platform. There are too many reissue-labels, whereby the artist are ripped off«.
