Mord Records
Mord Records, a Dutch techno-label from Rotterdam was founded by Bas Mooy in 2013. When he finds the time, Bas Mooy takes his international guests on a tour through the port of Rotterdam. »If you would film this, it would be the film showcasing the sound of the city«, he laughs. Although his home town stands in the shadow of the country’s capital Amsterdam, it is often associated with insane gabber-sounds and Bas Mooy feels very comfortable here. As an organiser, DJ and label owner he has been active in Rotterdam for around two decades now and has refined the other, lesser-known Rotterdam Sounds. These are harsh and industrial. “Strictly techno” is one of Mooy’s co-curated series. The name says it all. Likewise on his own record label, he went down a new path with Mord Records after curating Audio Assault together with Jeroen Liebgrets aka Radial which allowed him only a minimum amount of creative freedom. »After a few years you end up clinging tightly to a sound, whereby you can no longer go down any new routes. I wanted to start something new.« Mord Records represents his very own unique taste in music. Where no compromises need to be made because there are just no limits to comply with. “There is already a particular sound, which in my opinion is very diverse.” The sound aesthetic of Rotterdam’s industrial/techno scene is indeed noteworthy, however the predominantly young producers do come from all corners and ends of the world. Draping himself in anonymity Columbian artist Wire stands next to the high-flying French musician UVB and the Italian Noiseniks Ansome and D.Carbone. Also Bas Mooys’ own tracks and productions from his companion Radial or the US American techno legend Paul Birken come into play. At Mord Records, Bas Mooy has gathered a little international family around himself, but he does remain open to everyone and everything. When he is not surrounded by his family and not taking care of his own DJ and Producer career, including the organisation of club nights; he continues to look further for new, exciting techno sounds.
