Andrea Belfi discusses novel methods for traditional formats
Interview
Miasmah Recordings is a Berlin based record label founded by Norwegian Erik.K.Skodvin. It was initially founded in Oslo as an open source netlabel in 1999. Since 2006, Miasmah has also published experimental music in physical formats. “It all started when I wanted to publish my own bedroom compositions and graphic works.” recalls Erik Skodvin, a member of the Norwegian ambient project Deaf Center. Over the years Erik Skodvin, now based in Berlin, increasingly published the music of other people. “I was driven by curiosity and the love for new, exciting and peculiar sounds. My goal with Miasmah is to create its own surreal world of sounds and pictures and to find people, whom I can work and prosper together with.” he explains. The surrendering change to physical format occurred when Erik Skodvin put together the compilation ‘Silva’ for John Twells’ label ‘Type’ which got him in touch with a distributer. “This was the end of my digital releases. In this day and age the netlabel scene is no longer the same like it was at the end of the nineties or during the beginning of the millennium.”
For Skodvin when it comes to Miasmah it’s about quality rather than quantity, as the relatively small back catalog suggests. It is important to him that the artists bring with them an unique sound as well as a sense for adventure. Stylistically this results in an equally round like disparate image. Besides the ambient excursions of Slowdrive drummer Simon Kaboom, there are samples of melancholic excess from the Belgium Kreng and song orientated approaches which you are to hear on the album of Kaboom Karavans. Besides his own works under the pseudonym Svarte Greiner and the works of his band B/B/S with Aidan Baker and Andrea Belfi, there are especially well known acts, which because of their unconventional musical approaches find themselves at home at Miasmah. Hence people whom Skodvin often works and prospers together with at the same time.
