1080p Records
1080p is a Canadian record label founded in 2013 and is based in Vancouver. Even though 1080p was referred to as one of the most exciting labels of last year and acts like LNRDCROY, Project Pablo plus recently Mall Grab were made famous, Richard MacFarlane humbly calculates his efforts . “Sometimes friends help me to wrap up tapes, but mostly I do it on my own by the TV”, explains the New Zealander, who went slowly from cassette to 12". “The idea behind it was, to concentrate on the artists, who already had published on 1080p”, he says with regards to the new variety of format. “I like the idea of almost dance floor-suitable vinyl releases.” Almost is the keyword; effective tools for the DJ-practice are hard to find in the well stocked back catalogue of 1080p.
No wonder the label arose from the blog Rose Quartz, out of MacFarlane’s pursued passion for experimental music. “I wanted to expand my vague engagement in the DIY scene, especially the ideas, which I pursued with Rose Quartz”, he recollects his motivation for his move from Christchurch, New Zealand to the Canadian port city of Vancouver where 1080p was founded. “Originally I wanted to publish experimental electronic music, which at the time interested me; for people, who went from guitar orientated music and noise music in the direction of house and techno.” Hence he considers the label as: “relaxed and an inclusive place, on which new sounds can be tried out plus new genres and musical ideas can be explored.” A small refuge for artistic progress, which can rely on a network of mostly well-kept friendships in the real world and seldonly online friendships.
“I can not really claim, to comb through Soundcloud for the next good thing.” In the end a Soundcloud user can not help to wrap tapes. That is, if McFarlane doesn’t work on it by himself anyway whilst watching the TV.
