The lambda (λ) isn’t just one of the most used symbols in the mathematical sciences. Since the 1970s, it has become a symbol for liberation movements, by virtue of being used as an abbreviation for libertas, especially by queer groups. This makes it the perfect symbol for the poles ZULI is navigating in between – cold abstraction on the one hand, lived tendresse on the other. »Lambda« consists of 38 minutes of experimental electronics, at the same time retentive and overflowing. The cloudy soundscapes of the Egyptian-born musician are reminiscent of his adopted home, Berlin. His album is oriented towards some of the best sounds that were conceived in Germany in recent years.

You’ll find the corroded interferences of a KMRU, chromatic-fragmented singing à la Holly Herndon or a distanced warmth similar to skee mask. Repeatedly, ZULI changes up the tempo, repeatedly, collaborations with singers introduce unexpected timbres. This results in a gorgeous scenery, where every minute has new discoveries in store. Compared to the sound design, the songwriting, alas, falls short. The album is full of ideas that seldom seem well-elaborated. After two months of having the promo, I still struggle with remembering most song’s structures. »Lambda«, thus, makes for an ambivalent experience: it feels great while listening, yet, it leaves a pale aftertaste. Mileage may vary.
