Zopelar

Ritmo Freak

Tartelet • 2024

The boogie man is back! São Paulo producer Pedro Zopelar reveals himself to be a rhythm freak on his latest album. Not that he hasn’t demonstrated his skills in this area before. But such an open confession in his own name is sometimes quite nice. The same goes for the result. The title track “Ritmo Freak” pays homage to the electro tradition, including the use of a vocoder. On “Beat Me”, he quotes “Quadrophonia” by Quadrophonia, one of the techno hits of the nineties, ideal for large venues. “Gabriellinha’s Boogie” finally offers the typical disco-boogie-house with a Brazilian twist for Zopelar.

With “Moonlight”, he also reminds us that acid is one of his preferences, without limiting himself to a nostalgic reproduction of the genre. He much prefers to add a few things that are also close to his heart. This time there is even a very charming club anthem with synthesiser fanfares at the end. The fact that Zopelar stays true to his own path is no reason for criticism. On the one hand, he regularly varies the way he indulges his tastes, but on the other, he does it so skilfully and passionately that more is always good.
