In the last (almost) 20 years, Sasu Ripatti has proven to be an incredibly versatile musician. The artist from Finland has not only come forward with different variations of electronic music under various pseudonyms such as Sistol, Uusitalo, Luomo und Vladislav Delay (to name the important ones), he has also added a certain something to every genre he’s fiddled with. And we’re not even talking about the countless co-ops he’s been involved with. The most obvious question when thinking of »Ripatti03«, the third record on his very own label, founded and named by the artist last year, is: What could he have possibly created this time? The answer: One of the best things the Finnish musician has ever come up with. And that’s because Vladislav Delay has proven to be bold on »#5« and »#22«, these two tracks of more than 8 minutes. He has added something to his usual dub-based sound, which doesn’t even sound like Vladislav Delay anymore. And still, it doesn’t make the listener be scared of the apparent stranger. What has been added is close to Mark Fell’s static rhythm-structure, Akufen’s micro-sampling, Footwork’s restless dynamics and Ambient’s transcendence. And even though it might seem contradictory, it makes perfect sense when Vladislav Delay puts together the individual pieces on »Ripatti03« – and it’s a fun-ride, too.
