After the rather quiet predecessor »Vantaa«, Vladislav Delay’s new record for Raster-Noton, »Kuopio«, has much more tempo to offer. This might be hard to believe at first, especially when seeing that the musician from Finland has pressed 65 minutes of playing time into only nine tracks, of which none is shorter than five and a half minutes. What came out is definitely not too tough, especially not for those who appreciated the cool atmosphere of »Vantaa«. »Kuopio« is to be the successor of »Vantaa«, is to be a sequel of those landscape-descriptions, that the producer has started to make at the end of last year. Now, the cold season is back and something seems to have changed. It is somewhat obvious that Vladislav Delay is now trying to capture the hectic pace of a city, after having dealt with landscapes in the wide open – the album is named after the ninth biggest city in Finland. Instead of quiet and spherical moments, it’s now about real rhythms, cryptic beats, dissonant synthesizers and engaging echoes – and somehow, it all merges into one sometimes slightly annoying, but much more often surprisingly danceable whole. These tunes might be confusing at first, especially since everyone was expecting Vladislav Delay to be only making electro-acoustic music after »Vantaa«. However, to our great joy, he prefers to remain unpredictable. And that is really quite remarkable for someone who is releasing his 13th record in 13 years.
