John Gómez & Nick the Record present »Tangent«

Mr Bongo • 2024

The latest Mr Bongo compilation »Tangent« features the gems that have soundtracked one of London’s best underground parties for the past ten years. »Tangent« is run by longtime friends who met trading records with each other. John Gómez is an NTS Radio regular, and Nick The Record is a record dealer who spent years as a resident DJ for the Japan party Life Force. Their night has a free music policy so partygoers experience anything from rare groove, soul, disco, Brazilian, house and whatever sounds good enough to dance to. The pair play a global selection of tracks at Tangent and it continues here. Thailand’s Srirajah Sound System open the record with beautiful dub, and Champagn’ getting you writhing to soulful and sensual Guadeloupe zouk before a sixteen-minute, Nigerian highlife epic »Let’s Get High«.

The theme of love has driven the curation of the album, perhaps trying to harness those dancefloor moments when you connect to the euphoria of love songs blasted through a stellar soundsystem. Mac Thornhill’s cute boogie track ‘No Way To Control It’ does this perfectly, alongside the steamy, Balearic »Laberinto« and Pellegrin El Kady’s emotional rollercoaster »Seiva de Carnaval«. Other standouts include the catchy hip house of »Love Is Crazy«, LTA’s slick electro bopper and the pacy, samba percussion track »Nira Gongo« that would send the party into a sweaty frenzy. »Tangent« is a beautifully considered compilation that gets you excited to dance at their next party.
