Disco É Cultura Vol.2

Mad About • 2024

Four years after its first compilation, the Portuguese label Mad About is back with a second delivery of funk and boogie from Brazil. The tracks date from 1970 to 1984, which is reflected in the typical stylistic shifts of the era and the associated production characteristics: the later, the fatter the sound. The combination of North American “disco” and Brazilian “cultura”, as the title suggests, reliably releases energies that have an immediate positive effect on your well-being. Even where the tendencies towards Schweinefunk are discernible, the result has a rhythmic finesse and elegance that, with its velvety flowing groove, effortlessly overcomes all the censorship barriers of the brain and ensures unreserved enthusiasm. Marcos Valle, for example, makes excellent progress on his ‘Bicicleta’ thanks to electronic support, especially in the form of a synthesised bass. The same goes for Jorge Bens’ no less powerful “Surfista Solitário”, to name just two of the most famous names. Even if phrases like “addictive” are forbidden, this music has the effect of making you want to hear a lot more of it. Just under fifty minutes should be enough for now.
