The future is still a long way off. In the aftermath of the glorious »Join the Future« compilation of 2020, where JD Twitch presented early »UK Bleep & Bass 1988-1991«, Olivier Ducret now follows up with »Bleeps, Breaks + Bass« on his label Musique Pour La Danse, supported by the Dutch duo Bunkerheadz. The music centres around the years 1990 to 1991. At the same time, the view expands beyond the very first initial generation to artists who were carried along enthusiastically by the wave.
Well-known names like Unique 3 are featured with their »Digicality«, which delicately explores all the ups and downs of Bleep, along with A Certain Ratio with the track »Spirit Dance« from 1990, on which the post-punks of yesteryear were at the height of their stylistic powers. Even drum ‘n’ bass stars from later, like the musicians from the duo 4Hero, are featured with two solo projects: Tek 9, an early pseudonym of Dego, and R. Solution aka Marc Mac. There are also some little-known names today like Heychild, Ubik and Boneshakers. And who else still has the bleepified remix of KLF’s »What Time Is Love« on their radar, kindly provided by The Moody Boys? There are also some copyists among the artists; Techno Excursion, for example, generously samples a sample from LFO. But that’s part of the business.
