The last few years have taught us that the musicians from Animal Collective only seem to be able to compete with themselves. Either they release solo albums in the style of Panda Bear or they spot young, up-and-coming musicians, who they then release on their own label, Paw Tracks. If you listen to the first bars of Toro Y Moi’s debut, you won’t believe your ears at first, the extent to which Animal Collective reverberates here. However, the longer you listen to »Causer Of This«, the more an independence in sound emerges. Chaz Bundick’s acoustic patterns are a little clearer, the beats are sharper, the synthesiser moves more into the foreground. Gradually it becomes apparent that the eleven three-minute songs on »Causer Of This« are merely tracks in disguise and therefore somehow form the interface between Animal Collective and Floating Points. If you want, you can also discover set pieces from J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Phoenix or a French House band of your choice. »Causer Of This« is one of these stylistic hybrids that will give music lovers a great deal of pleasure. Give the album a little time, and it could become your new »Person Pitch«.
