Squarepusher

Ufabulum

Warp • 2012

He’s back. The band was left behind on the battlefield of Shobaleader – mistreated by ProgRock and contaminated by 80s Pop, the soloistic E-Bass was strangled with wires and sequencers. Tom Jenkinson, the great chamaeleon of the musical world, announced that he was going to do what he had always been doing and what he was always admired for by all electronic followers. He held his promise and broke it at the same time. The announcement said »aggressive and melodious« and is consequently put into action. Whoever believes the media’s copy/paste-myth saying that Squarepusher was going back to his classical sound, should be prepared for a thumping with widespread bruises. The variation of styles which the Englishman spreads onto his minefield is as unseizable as the title of his 13th album. Subbasses in an acid-thunderstorm, Pacman having sex with lindworms and hymnal arches of melody in a close combat with dissonance. Orthopedically challenging breaks, the »Springfield Story« in fast motion and Rave on high-speed missiles. And all of that at the same time. Kitsch and Star Wars are undeniably close. The sound space rustles with cluster bombs and pink flames of explosion. »Ufabulum« is beastly, ecstatic and inexhaustible. This is the end of electronic music.
