The Snowgoons don’t have to hide behind big names anymore; they made a name for themselves. The team of producers from Germany managed to get a foot in the door of American underground rap music – in the beginning almost without anybody noticing – and let the bomb explode in 2007 when they released German Lugers. Since then DJ Illegal, Det and by now Danish producer Sicknature are an integral part of American rap biz who have done production work for dozens of rappers (including Afu-Ra, Sean Price, Ill Bill, Raekwon and many more). With the collabo-album Your Favourite MC together with Reef The Lost Cauze there is a new Longplayer in an impressive row of releases coming up. In the beginning you get the impression that Reef is not on fire yet. Apart from trivial battletracks that seem to consist mainly of the hookline there is not much more to discover. Luckily that changes as soon as you get a few tracks further in. Songs like The Devil’s Advocate or Timezones have to offer a little bit more content and thoughtfulness. And the single Black Opz even displays something that you might call social criticism. So after a weak start the album gets better and more diverse with each track which – of course – is necessary if you want to be a favourite MC. No reasons for criticism are given if you have a look on the production side. You don’t know it any different but it is still impressive how dense and powerful the Snowgoons’ instrumentals are: Banging baselines, strings, pianos, choirs, heaps of samples. The production work is orchestral opulence in its purest form. At the most you could complain about a little redundancy, because some of the instrus sound a little alike. On the other hand those powerful beats are exactly what the growing fanbase is expecting.
