Priori

This But More

NAFF • 2024

French-Canadian Francis Latreille has been making waves as a DJ and producer under the name Priori for the past six years. His latest album, »This But More«, released on his own label NAFF, is a whopping 14 tracks, all crammed into one hour. In this tour de force between ambient, downbeat, breakbeat and trance, Priori explores the full spectrum of melancholy, from sadness, fear and anger to hope and reconciliation. The album is characterised by a shift between relatively short, beatless and beat-driven tracks, typical of electronic music.

»This But More« is both a listener’s and a dancer’s album, suitable for both atmospheric warm-ups and meditative relaxation on the living room sofa. Standout tracks include »Learn To Fly«, »Ruins« and »Moonstone«, all of which exist within the same milieu but bring their own unique, powerful facet to it. On »This But More«, Priori is clearly inspired by Traumprinz and his signature fusion of trancy techno and house with lush, introspective ambient. This could easily sound cheap and derivative, but thankfully it’s far from the case, as Priori, like nthng, manages to find his own unique, meaningful sound.
