Prinzhorn Dance School

Clay Class

DFA • 2012

Besides their extraordinary sense of minimalistic melodies, another specialty of the post-punk-duo Prinzhorn Dance School seems to be their keen sense of good timing. When their eponymous debut was released in 2007, boy-girl-duos were ruling the indie-scene. And now? Their second album, »Clay Class«, has been released and, yet again, the timing is just perfect. Because now, indie isn’t selling that well, anymore, the whole thing became somewhat deflated and, as a band, you have to come up with something new. Hence, many bands turn their heads towards the past, the abstruse or the artistic. And from far away, the duo from Portsmouth are waving from a place where they’ve been for a long time now, and where many other bands want to get to. The production is so incredibly dirty that you have to ask yourself, whether there isn’t actually magic involved. But no, »Clay Class« just really sounds that way! Tobin Prinz and Suzi pass the ball back and forth with their spoken-word-lyrics, they sing – amongst other things – of the »Flora And Fauna Of Britain In Bloom« or, in »Crisis Team«, use the omnipresent mood for a crisis to create one of the most bizarre love songs in a long time. Not without irony it says: »I need your crisis in my life/ can’t breathe with no accident/ I feed the crisis in your life/ can’t breathe with no accident«.
