Peter Rehberg

At GRM

Portraits GRM • 2022

The musician Peter Rehberg, who died almost exactly a year ago, and the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM), the institute for research into electroacoustic music founded by Pierre Schaefer in 1956, were closely connected. Not only has Peter Rehberg launched the »Portraits GRM« series on his Editions Mego label since 2000, presenting works by current GRM artists, and since 2012 has been reissuing unheard, out-of-print music from the legendary institute on the Recollection GRM sub-label, he has also been a welcome guest in Paris himself. Two live recordings made as part of these collaborations have now been released under the title »At GRM«. The first piece, recorded in 2009, was created entirely on a laptop. Over 21:24 minutes, the musician also known as Pita spreads out a huge palette of sounds that are crisp and buttery, molecular and liquid and secular and sacred. For the second track, written in 2016, Peter Rehberg also used modular synthesisers. At 17:33 minutes, the chowder is murkier here, and it goes down to nautical depths where the barrage bursts. A great release, that marks the whole musical spectrum of the much-missed artist.
