Pellegrino & Zodyaco

Koinè

Early Sounds • 2025

Hailing from Naples, Pellegrino is an established force in the Italian scene as a DJ, producer and head of the Early Sounds imprint. After four years of album silence, he returns with Zodyaco, his full band format, to deliver the glorious ‘Koinè’. It’s a record full of Italo-disco grooves mixed with funk, jazz elements and a sprinkling of global sounds. While influenced by classic disco and playing with vintage synth sounds, the record is informed by the past, but it’s not an exercise in retro nostalgia. »Koinè«, which translates as ‘common language’, is a bubbly and fun record that brings plenty of groove and style to the table.

Opener »Pecché« kicks things off perfectly with its vintage disco flavour, seductive synths, crisp percussion and congas. On »Mario« we’re treated to one of the finest funk basslines of the set, while the light and catchy vocals dance across the top of the mix. Elsewhere, Pellegrino and his band change things up on »L’aura«, adding horns and a distinct Latin jazz flavour to the proceedings. “La Malìa Del Sur” begins with acoustic guitar and a Spanish influence before going into full Italo disco mode. On »Koinè«, Pellegrino & Zodyaco have pulled out all the stops, delivering a tight set of groove-laden bangers that celebrate vintage sounds without ever wallowing in them. They may be playing with classic elements, but they have one eye firmly on the future.
