The term »multi-culti« is often used in a derogatory way, depending on who uses it. But with the Canadian label Multi Culti it is very clear that the operators want the name to be understood positively. Which can be perfectly understood by the music of Nicola Cruz. Strictly speaking already at his person. Born in France to Ecuadorian parents, the producer grew up between European club sounds and Andean music. Meanwhile he lives in Quito and combines musical traditions from all over the world. He mixes Nigerian chants with cumbia rhythms (»Aima«), for example; in »Naeku« Persian oud tones meet the acid frequencies of a Japanese Roland TB-303; »Drom Tradisie« is a dialogue between North African percussion and digital synthesizers, the latter sometimes imitating xylophones. A highlight is »Third Eye Dub«, carried by filigree drums, with stylish echoes of sampled voices and a rather hypnotic oud riff. Trance music, very finely woven, which gains even more towards the end. Meditative then the conclusion with »Kawe’s Dream«, dreamy melodies and songs inspired by the Tibetan book of the dead »Bardö Thödol«, performed in a fantasy language. One would probably have understood very little anyway.
