MF Doom

Operation: Doomsday

Fondle 'Em • 1999

Operation: Doomsday had been the marker for the metamorphosis of Daniel Dumile aka ZevLoveX becoming MF Doom. It was also the first release after a long break of the former KMD-member. Now, a super-villain enters the stage, equipped with a craving for revenge against the industry and a silver mask to hide his identity, crafted by the graffiti-artist Lord Scotch. The mask serves as self-protection from prejudice and as a statement against social exclusion. »Some people wearin’ masks don’t mean, that they did somethin†˜«. Through MF Doom, a character was created that causes more ambiguity than certainty. His brain seems to move along the thin line between genius and madness and sometimes vanishes altogether behind the fiction of a marvel-comic, in which his character plays the leading role. Either way, Doom always plays the counter part. Dr. Doom suspiciously revolts against reality – but instead of staging an egocentric showmanship, he simply discloses his abstruse literary phantasies. Operation: Doomsday is one of the underground’s most legendary albums and has served as the origin of an absurd number of releases amongst thousands of Alter Egos. And that’s just one of the reasons why the album has become an unforgettable classic.
