»Periodic Orbits Of A Dynamic System Related To A Knot« is Mark Fell´s fourth release in just one year. First, there was »Multistability«, an album he dedicated to the multiple stability in the psychology of form and system theory. Shortly after that he chose the speaker Celestion UL8 as his source of inspiration, which is an important tool for his personal sound experience. What followed were remakes. »Manitutshu« was the result of the collaboration with Errorsmith, in the end though nothing more than a rework of some sounds from »UL8«. His most recent release reflects his work on »Multistability«, consists of sound art, which Mark Fell introduced last year at »Supersimetria: New Languages in Computer Music« and of versions of tracks, which were developed on some recent appearances of the englishman. This makes »Periodic Orbits« an »almost-live-album«, bringing together this multitude of works onto two LP sides of 23 minutes and 16 seconds each. Technically they´re not really tracks, they´re more two halves which line up music by Mark Fell within this exact amount of time. Sometimes, it all seems without connection and context and this is what makes the difference to other of his oeuvres so obvious: They were all based on a stringent sound concept. The listener of his earlier work was some sort of participant observer, marveling at the quality of sounds, which were produced by Fell using different sound sources. Now, one is somehow lost, trying to find an outline in his music. The lack of order and dramaturgy in his compositions makes it difficult to follow his music with the requested attention, especially as the individual tracks are not organised as a whole. Even though the clarity and conciseness of Mark Fell´s sounds isn´t compromised by that, I was personally missing a lead through his new repertoire.
