Spiritual Songs for Lovers Sing

Mute • 2016

After the end of WU LYF it was back to work for the singer Ellery Roberts, the successor project is also in capital letters. Along with the Dutch artist Ebony Hoorn, he now forms LUH which stands for Lost under Heaven. Respectively bombastic, on »Spiritual Songs For Lovers To Sing«, it’s almost megalomaniac.
Roberts’ touching, restless singing in its whole rough intensity is and stays unforgettable, the humble and clear voice of Hoorn forms a fitting counterpart. Content wise as well as structurally, there are notions of Marvin Gaye’s
»What’s Going On?«, although the presented blockbuster sound is miles apart from swinging soul. Together with the producer Bobby Krlic (The Haxan Cloak) LUH designs an opulent song-series, at its centre »$ORO«, an EDM-autotune-monster, which has the disillusion of failing Neoliberalism as its theme. This utopia-free present time description is in opposition to the heroic self-empowerment of lovers with sometimes religious-esoteric, sometimes radical-political images by Hoorn and Roberts. With the »We against the rest of the world«-rhetoric, it naturally fits only too well that the two of them are an actual couple, which simultaneously becomes even more authentic through this fact. One is only too willing, to content to the seemingly naive promise of salvation »Love is the answer«.
