Review R&B and Soul

Lee McDonald

Sweet Magic

Favortie Recordings • 2012

A glance is worth a thousand words. And Lee McDonald’s glance practically throws his affection for cheesy Soul-Jazz into our faces. Reading some of his track’s titles, the theatrical emotions of their content are obvious. If hearing the name Barry White makes you think of greasy hairstyles and superficial heart-breaking poetry, stop reading right now. This is all about one thing. Love, love and once again love, which is always coated in the same metaphors and is echoing in the ever affective tremolos. As simple as it might be to ridicule this way of obsolete praise, it is a fact that no one was as good as it as the Soul Train Generation of the 1970s. Lee McDonald has definitely earned his standing among them. Even if you don’t like what he does, there is no doubt that he does it exceedingly well. In every single syllable we hear the conviction of newly found love. And his vocal force and his impressive phrasing can easily measure up to Tower of Power’s Lenny Williams. If this is not enough for you, listen to The Carpenters version of »We’ve only just begun«. Although it’s expectedly in line with the rest, it makes Rare Groove’s affectionate’s hearts beat faster and secures this record’s sure standing in the wishlists of renown DJs.
