Those who remember the cat-bus from »Mein Nachbar Totoro« can stop reading right now. Because the collab-project »Kidsuke« by Kidkanevil and Daisuke Tanabe is the perfect soundtrack for a ride in exactly that vehicle, seeming to spring right from a child’s fantasy, but turning out to be a part of reality. Both producers combine moments of quietness and pause with beats and synthesizers, which sometimes sound like video-games, other times like gloomy mother nature. In tracks like »Ghostgirl«, a certain horror is being celebrated, sleeping within the music but never breaking out, while calamity is brewing in the back. Both musicians put together the single layers of »Tiny Concrete Block« in a very delicate manner, the big legs made of bass, carrying the track through the night. »Kidsuke« conceals various things behind the obvious. »Harmonics Pt.2« starts out slow and then begins to spin more and more, until the vocals become part of the circle, before some kind of hyperactive alarm goes off and manages to somehow fit in the sound. There is no genre describing this music, because it consists of Wonky, Instrumental HipHop, Ambient and Downbeat, but it also consists of more. So much more. Kidkanevil and Tanabe have created a pretty unique record with »Kidsuke« – that’s just as audible in the beginning of »Cherry Chimes« as it is in the crackling of »Frogs In A Well«. And in the same way, as we think about the cat-bus, it is easy to imagine that both gentlemen are wearing a big grin on their faces, while leading the listener through this strange world, which is still so similar to the known one. Being at the mercy of something unknown has hardly ever felt this good.
