Karriem Riggins

To The Jungle

Madlib Invazion • 2024

The eighth part of Madlib and Egon’s Music Library series features a collection of drum patterns and beats by Karriem Riggins. The 48-year-old American musician presents 26 pieces between one and four minutes in length. While he had complete creative freedom during the recording, the pieces are primarily designed to serve as samples or soundtracks. This can also be heard on »To The Jungle«. The sparse tracks are nevertheless permeated by an exciting groove. However, there is not much variety in the rhythm: »Salty« staggers along, »Motown Sound« does exactly what it says on the tin (just the drums) and »The Only One« slowly rotates to the left, sometimes with a little more space in the sound. Subversive moments excluded. The record comes with the caveat that it can be enjoyed like any other album: »Listen, think, repeat«. And indeed, the sound of »To The Jungle« is the perfect source of inspiration to clear your head, organise your thoughts and generally slow down your whole life.
