João Selva

Onda

Underdog • 2025

Following up 2023’s acclaimed »Passarinho«, France based Brazilian singer and guitarist João Selva returns with the groove-laden »Onda«. On this release, Selva’s fourth full length effort, he delves further into the Latin-inflected soul and funk that he has made his name with. The result is a nuanced set of bangers that are drenched in sunshine and full of character. Across the set, the tracks are accessible but demonstrate a real range of mood and colour.

Opening title track »Onda« kicks things off with its bright guitars and ear-worm chorus before »Fantástica Bahia« draws out Selva’s disco influences and provides gloriously uplifting horn parts. French singer Clea Vincent perfectly complements Selva on »Viens Danser«, providing one of the album’s many standout moments. Alongside the funkier groove driven tracks, Selva also delivers softer more tender moments such as the ballad ›Navegante‹, which perfectly switches up the pace. Onda finds the artist at the peak of his powers, building on the success of his past releases and honing a sound that is imbued with a broad appeal due to its infectious combination of Brazilian tradition and contemporary pop, soul and funk influences. Selva makes uplifting music with aplomb and with »Onda« delivers an album bound to find itself on frequent rotation for existing fans and new converts alike.
