Jimi Tenor & Kabu Kabu

Mystery Of Aether

Kindred Spirits • 2012

Those who still connect Jimi Tenor to Techno, his 1995-hit »Take Me Baby« and to Warp Records must have slept for quite some time. Our favorite psychopath from Finland, who sits between esoterica and uncompromising sex-appeal, has been moving on for more than ten years now. It’s actually been even longer than that, because his albums on Warp Records were much more jazz and easy listening than beat-thumping. After the first half of the last decade, Jimi Tenor started to turn towards Africa and began to rediscover the history of funk and jazz around Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke. In 2007, Jimi Tenor found the one and only rhythm-formation understanding his unconventional idea of Afrobeat-Spacejazz with Kabu Kabu, who’ve played with Fela Kuti before, and who contributed enthusiasm and indispensable funk. Now, on »Mystery Of Aether«, their third album, it’s again all about quick Afro-beats and sluggish desert-thrillers, space-synths and flutes for lovers, caravan-winds and »Stardust«-vocals. There isn’t really any progression to be found – but Jimi Tenor & Kabu Kabu can still make your day with an irresistible groove and their unmistakable joy for playing.
