Igor Tipura

Dwams

Unknown To The Unknown • 2016

Tape of the Year 2023

Igor Tipura has pretty much appeared out of nowhere. Only the soundcloud location-marker tells us that his newly founded label Kitjen is based in Germany. Recently, he has placed a track at Unknown To The Unknown DJ Haus’ clever launch pad for all things bangin’ – only to be pimped by Philipp Lauer for the b-side and turned into one of this year’s greatest hits. But let’s start at the beginning – at the original version of »Dwams«, which had enraptured synth-layers bellow across a slowly pulsating beat. It all sounds far away and much more like the hammering in the back of your head after a party than like peak-time moments in the strobe light. Even the pointillist moments of trace and acid don’t change that. However, Tipura probably doesn’t even aim for the dancefloor but rather wants to tell stories. He is actually quite good at that, even though he has spelled out rave nostalgia to the very last detail. »Dwams« is a track for the last third of a Monday-morning-closing or for a hunch of goosepumps while sitting on your couch at home. However, Phillip Lauer’s has interpreted the track quite differently, having sped up its pace and making the synths go wild. By adding a clapping back beat, which thankfully doesn’t overdo the EBM-references, the Tuff City Kid is sanding the patina off the original. What’s left is a shivering almost-acid, which knows how to force its way into areas of wave greater than life and cold as ice. At the places where Tipura wants to tell a story, Lauer wants to offer an experience: there is one great module after the other, the whole structure has a vague italo-disco style and doesn’t even matter in the end. This way, Lauer’s remix is the perfect complementary track to Tipura’s a-side, and, at the same time, the latest dancefloor-hit of the summer of 2016.
