Hedge Maze

Dysania

Lobster Theremin • 2015

House music has had one drink too many. Now it’s in bed, faint and exhausted, producing nothing but muffled tones, echoing around. Eventually, the shaker’s fierceness cuts the cloth from the EP’s mouth. It still doesn’t get any louder. Hedge Maze’s EP-debut is fading from the beginning, is getting lost in itself. And it’s a pleasure to be allowed to listen. The record’s title is the name of the game. »Dysania« describes a condition, in which you cannot get out of bed due to a hangover. With this EP, Hedge Maze is giving us a great soundtrack to that feeling: You hear the heaviness in the track’s limbs, the previous night is still lingering around. Your ears are fluttering, it’s grinding everywhere. Three tracks are tumbling back and forth between darkness and a kind of relaxation you can find in a hangover when feeding it with ibuprofen or THC. Very rarely, there is a synth pad shining some light into the sparse muffling of short-winded claps, feeble drums and staggering background noises. »Dysania« sounds monotonous, blurred by wafts of mist. However, in this case, that’s not a bad thing. Instead, a new world opens up, once you allow yourself to embrace the EP, embrace the hangover. There are so many different shades of crackling and grinding, and it’s almost narcotic to get lost in these variations of noise, while the familiar beat slowly relieves you of your headache and blurs the border between your body and the mattress.
