Ladies and gentlemen, please put on your headphones. We are presenting the beats that will make producers wake sweating and screaming in the middle of the night. On Grischa Lichtenbergers »And IV (Inertia)«, rhythmical beasts groan and stomp extremely dense in sound and condensed to the max over the scratched parquet floor. From Rap-Beat via Electro and Wonky all the way to some Ambient, the guy from Bielefeld leaves nothing else but the wobbly skeleton of the composition behind. Melodies are being avoided. What remains is the incredible bass, the claps, a rattling sound. It’s almost a miracle that this minimalism works over 21 tracks. This might be due to the length of the pieces, which Lichtenberger doesn’t stretch unnecessarily. Or it might be because the beats are complex enough to develop quite a bit of dark corners within their amusement. Above all, though, Lichtenberger adds enough Funk to his beats, which reminds one of the brilliant, programmatic »Rhythm«-album of his label-fellow Frank Brettschneider. Possibly, »And IV (Inertia)« is the mere skeletal structure of a lost Autechre-album, before the Mancunians opened Pandora’s box on it. Are the headphones still on?
