Together with the composer Adrian Younge Ghostface Killah has come up with one of the better Wu-Tang-releases of the previous years: »Twelve Reasons To Die«. is part of a transmedial project. It’s been released at the same time as the comic of the same name, telling the story of an African-American henchman for the Italian mafia, who was betrayed and murdered by his employees and whose mortal remains were pressed into twelve LPs. Now, whenever those LPs are being played, he can return to the world of the living in order to take revenge. The Detroid-based producer Apollo Brown has taken this gangster-/slasher-movie turned into rap and has dressed it in an appropriate sound-garment. While Adrian Younge had his repetitive soundscape recorded by actual musicians, Apollo Brown has used the means of a classic home producer. And even though he has moved his sample-generated productions a bit away from Younge’s soundtrack-aesthetics, he still follows the sound-steps of classic Wu-Tang-releases: there are pianos, strings, a few winds here and there, smooth bass-lines, dry drumbreaks. It’s quite becoming to this hiphop-audio-drama – next to Younge’s original music, the »The Brown Tape« is standing almost on eye-level. Those who – rightfully so – consider »Twelve Reasons To Die« to be awesome, should help themselves without hesitating. And all the others should basically do the same.
