After »LP1«, nothing will ever be the same again. FKA Twig’s first record could be the very album that’s already paving the ground for most records of the year 2019. A trendsetter for the future, interlaced, wrapped up, and well clever, all done in no more than ten tracks. It’s reduced to the core, to the substance. There isn’t a single beat, not one pattern that’s not essential for the whole track. On top, you’ll find Tahliah Barnetts high pitched voice, coming directly from the gloomiest windings of the digital world. Of course, it’s all about sex again, about being lonely, and therefore somehow also about the big world outside the bedroom: »When I trust you, we can do it with the lights on«, is the message on »Lights On«. But it would be nonsense to reduce »LP1« to that very aspect, and it’s almost embarrassing to even point that out because it’s obvious that everything on this record has many layers, many meanings and profound depths – to a point that is almost scary, really. Because on her debut, FKA Twigs leaves all borders behind. Those looking for R’n’B will find it just as easily as those looking for TripHop – and still, those categories don’t even fit anymore. Because »LP1« is getting denser with every track, draws all the right conclusions, beckons you to the core of its meaning. When you listen to »Closer«, when hearing the sacral, echoing lyrics of the 26-years old British musician, then, at the latest, you’ll realize that you’ve been lured into a trap. »I’m here to be closer to you.« So much warmth, so much love, so much room to let it all out. Everything on this record is in constant motion, like the subliminal flows, hardly noticeable mixed in by FKA Twigs, the beats, hovering above the tracks’ infidelity. It’s the most individual, strange, wonderful and great piece of music in a verly long time. It’s a record to fall in love with, to wear away, to get lost in. Nothing will ever be the same again, not after »LP1«. It’s beauty in perfection, perfection in beauty – music for more than just one life.
