Faye Webster

I Know I’m Funny Haha

Secretly Canadian • 2021

Only 23 years young and already on Barack Obama’s list of favorite songs. Faye Webster embodies indie, but already has both feet in the spotlight. Even likeable music videos in DIY aesthetics don’t change that. There’s no star in the making here, it’s ready and waiting. With »I Know I’m Funny Haha« the musician from Atlanta, Georgia now releases her fourth album. And this comfortingly warm mix of indie rock, country and soul sounds familiar after just a few bars. In the course of the 40 minutes, there is no hecticness. »Both All The Time« takes its time the most. Nevertheless, the piece has a groove that develops suction. This is not least due to the irresistible riff, which pushes itself as if in a slalom run between kick and snare. On “In A Good Way,” Webster’s vocals take center stage. “I didn’t know that I was capable of being happy right now,” she sings before even an instrument is heard. What follows is a nearly four-minute declaration of love, complete with head-nodding vocals and fresh lyric ideas: »I know you’ve been having nightmares lately / And I’m sorry I fall asleep first«. Competently played, cleverly written – »I Know I’m Funny Haha« seems less courageous than its three predecessors, but more thoughtful. Of course, the music has retained its charm. Because the eleven songs still bear the clear signature of their creator.
