DJ Marcelle: The Musical

Play Loud! Productions • 2022

DJ Marcelle is unpredictable. She is not the least bit interested in other people’s expectations of her music. She also refuses to let others influence her DJ sets or her own tracks. »The Musical« is the name of DJ Marcelle’s latest album. And – of course – none of this has anything to do with the Wikipedia definition of »musical«: A musical […] is a form of popular musical theatre, usually performed in two acts, that combines singing, dancing, acting/dialogue and music in a continuous plot. Her »musical«, in contrast, is kept extremely minimal electronically, loop-based and, on first hearing, sketchy and produced right to the point. The five pieces, which are between three quarters of a minute and a good quarter of an hour long, thematically deal with the effects of the different phases of the corona period. The »musical« begins with a brief musical warning that the record is scratched, after which it thematises the best DJ school, illegal parties and food in various forms. At one point, as on her website, she discusses all the soups she has eaten on tour and in restaurants. And then the last track, a 17-minute fidget techno tune called »Smacznego!«, which means »Bon appétit« in Polish. In her promo video, Marcelle loads her turntable with all kinds of delicacies. All this happens without any words. »The Musical« is the world’s first instrumental musical. Great! DJ Marcelle – see cover – doesn’t really much care about what others think.
