Dels

GOB

Big Dada • 2011

It doesn’t come as a surprise: following the sensational singles, Kieren Dickins’ debut-album meets all expectations in every respect and proves that the future of Hip Hop is not dependent on having to chum up with trends like Grime or Dubstep. It »only« takes the strong artistic visions of a highly talented MC and exceptional artist. In addition, besides the brilliant, surrealistic lyrics, Dels also provides the conceptual designs of videos and artwork. In combination with a flow reminding the listener of a British Jay-Z and the support of the ideal producers, inevitably, something great had to be created. Joe Goddard of Hot Chip performs as a kind of mentor, producer and guest-singer in personal union, while Micachu, who normally strolls along Indie-Paths with the Shapes, has already proven her affection for Hip Hop with previous mixtapes. However, the major part of the album was produced by Kwes, who provides much more than just a beat to rhyme on. Instead, he creates ambitious sound-collages which are the ideal groundwork for Dels’ gloomy, yet never hopeless stories. That his Big Dada label-colleague Roots Manuva appears as the only guest-MC on GOB, can be interpreted as a mutual act of respect, but also as a changing of the guard within UK-Hip Hop.
