Clark

The Last Panthers

Warp • 2016

Apart from his hippiesque record »Iradelphic« Clark:http://www.hhv-mag.com/de/glossareintrag/1729/chris-clark is much more known for massive beats, which tend to merge into rough raving every now and then. Hence, it is all the nicer to see that Jack Thorne, creator of the six-part TV show »The Last Panthers«, has trusted him with slowness and despair. When digging a bit deeper, it is actually not that surprising: Chris Clark has always proven to be a real connoisseur of sound processing, especially when entering the darker fields. However, it is still a different game to be employed as a soundtrack-composer by the Murdoch operated pay-TV channel Sky Atlantic. And still, Chris Clark’s soundscapes work perfectly in this »post-democratic space«, as Andreas Busche has described the show’s setting on “Spiegel-Online The scenery of »The Last Panthers«, filled with inner emptiness, bleakness, despair, trauma and hopelessness, at times reminiscent of directing artist Andrei Tarkowski, seems to be absorbing Clark’s cold piano tracks, drones and noise-frequencies like a suicidal sponge. Even without the show’s pictures, Chris Clark manages to pull us into this resigning and somewhat claustrophobic world, in which even a torn and wet cloak promises more warmth than the reality outside has to offer.
