Brannten Schnüre

Aprilnacht

Aguirre • 2014

The ghosts they conjured up were already audible on “Aprilnacht“. The Würzburg duo Brannten Schnüre consists of Christian Schoppik and Katie Rich. And enough people are still wondering what it all means. But this record doesn’t bring them any closer to an answer. Originally released on cassette ten years ago, this album contains eleven ramshackle and minimalist songs in their familiar lo-fi style.

Back then, the project consisted only of Schoppik, but everything that makes up the sound of Brannten Schnüre is already there. Hauntology, samples from post-war television, dark ambient, folk, reminiscences of Coil or other in-between artists, all jumbled together in a way that makes you wonder if it’s all a big joke. (It most likely isn’t.) With “Aprilnacht” you have to let yourself go and shut out the rest of the world. If you don’t get a tight feeling in your chest by listening to the title track, you should try it in complete darkness. That’s when all the ghosts on this record become palpable.
