Brainwaltzera

Itsame

Film • 2022

They still exist, these anonymous artists. Brainwaltzera has been on record as a musician since 2016, and their appearance as unknown purveyors of electronic quirkiness will continue to be successful for the time being. In contrast, the quirkiness of the project though which »Itsame« has released their second album may lead one to assume that it is another alias belonging to the British musician Richard D. James, widely known as Aphex Twin, who is widely appreciated for his herbaceous-interwoven sounding oddities. Maybe, but it could just as easily be someone with a great fondness for the Warp figurehead James and soul-mate gearheads like the Scottish brother duo Boards of Canada. There is no getting around the comparisons this time either, Brainwaltzera is largely to blame. For many of the 17 tracks, in which he or she unfurls over a length of 75 minutes, sound pretty much like – see above. Which is not a bad thing at all, after all, Brainwaltzera is not a carbon copy of these presumed role models, but often enough gets his or her own spin on things. Or surprises with a stylistic volte-face like »Prove Ur Not a Robot [Skip]«, which consists of slightly distorted guitar loops. Wise guys could now yell »See now, Seefeel!« to substantiate the epigone accusation, but as Paolo Sorrentino’s series »The New Pope« says, »When you don’t have proof, you don’t have proof«. Incidentally, Brainwaltzera does a very impressive job. Identity is overrated anyway.
