Atmosphere have grown up. Three years after When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, Atmosphere have settled within the family circle and have recorded their seventh studio album. Fans of Seven’s Travels might actually need to take a moment to befriend the path of music that the record has chosen to take. The Family Sign is almost a concept album, leaning towards instrumental and blues, while only bearing little resemblance to Ant’s production-experiments made for When Life Gives You Lemons. Now, the duo from Minneapolis have invited the musicians Nate Collins and Erick Anderson to support the album with their guitar and piano. With The Family Sign, Atmosphere decided to leave the world of party behind in order to deliver a serious album. Slug is using the mic to lead us through his world as a father, bruv and pal. He tells stories of his life, its most important people and everything else that comes along with it. The stories bear the right amount of authenticity – either in a serious matter when dealing with domestic violence in The Last to Say or with the usual ease like in Your Name Here, when talking of encounters that are absolutely unnecessary. The minimalistic stamp of the album leads to a closer listening so that one can be enchanted by Slug’s Storytelling in tracks like Became. The Family Sign amplifies the impression of musical coherence that Atmosphere had already started to create in the previous EP To All My Friends.
