44th Move

Anthem

Black Acre • 2025

Alfa Mist and Richard Spaven have long been leading innovators in the UK jazz scene. The former is known for his progressive sonic fusions, blending jazz sensibilities with influences from a variety of genres, as seen on celebrated albums like »Antiphon« and »Variables«. Meanwhile, Spaven has earned recognition for his dazzling drumming with artists ranging from Flying Lotus to Goldie. As a bandleader, he has also released numerous albums that combine his tight, almost processed drum breaks with intricate production and collaborations with various instrumentalists. Fans of these forward-thinking musicians will be excited by »Anthem«, their debut collaborative effort under the 44th Move name, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

The album opens with »Photos«, where Spaven’s shuffling drum grooves and Alfa Mist’s slow-evolving keyboard progressions are complemented by scratching from legendary Bristol-based turntablist Awkward. The title track »Anthem« features the beautiful flute work of Graeme Blevins, set against a backdrop that nods to broken-beat and hip-hop while maintaining strong jazz roots. On »2nd September«, guitarist Jamie Leeming takes the spotlight with his fluid, engaging playing. The lead single »The Move« leans most into their hip-hop influences, with a guest appearance from MC Quelle Chris. Alfa Mist’s own languid yet captivating flows are showcased on »Free Hit Outro«. The album is primarily instrumental, but the vocal contributions add variety and texture. With 44th Move, Spaven and Alfa Mist have crafted a forward-looking, genre-blending, relaxed, and deeply engaging album—a true triumph.
