Magic Pony Ride

Planet Mu • 2022

Mike Paradinas has ridden on an Icelandic pony, gambled on Netflix and commemorated his late father. And because the Planet µ boss is rolling Amen Breaks again on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his breakthrough record, »Magic Pony Ride« has become the latest burst of fireworks in an eternal firebrand. After all, on average, the man releases an album every two years – and has been doing so for 30 years! But you wouldn’t have expected him to jump on a horse to do so – hippity-hop, hippity-hop, little horse running at a gallop. It doesn’t matter, though, it’s good for the cause. The beats tumble as if the young Squarepusher had invented a flux compensator to crash into a trance revival by way of liquid Eurodance detours. The melodies stretch like candyfloss at 37 degrees in the shade. Harmonies shine like a rainbow on acid. A lot of fun for suckers for beautiful chord progressions. Tracks like »Turquoise Hyperfizz« also shovel vocals into amphetamine land, which µ-Ziq breaks down into babble language. Makes a lot of sense as it all sounds like a dream you haven’t popped enough pills for yet. In the course of the twelve tracks, the strumming sometimes spills out of the modular construction kit. In the end, however, the patch cables are still plugged into the right socket. Selected ambient works for people who only find relaxation on Ritalin.
