Kamasi Washington. Terrace Martin. Robert Glasper. Three big names, one band: Dinner Party. As if three of the biggest names in modern jazz weren’t enough, hip-hop producer 9th Wonder is also joining in. Their second album, »Enigmatic Society«, was released digitally at the end of April this year. Exclusively on HHV Records, there will now be a vinyl edition on clear/blue marbled vinyl with red speckles, limited to 500 copies.
Magic that’s almost Voodoo
Despite the meeting of these musical great minds, the music is first and foremost super chill. This music has its heart in rap’s golden era, the clear references to soul of the 70s and R&B are almost automatically part of the programme anyway. »Enigmatic Society« is not a jazz album, which one might have expected in view of the names behind Dinner Party, but rather something like a contemporary update to the sound of the Soulquarians.
