»Superb«, the new album by Surprise Chef, focuses on spontaneity rather than precision

14.03.2025

Is there something in Melbourne’s drinking water, or is it the Australian sunshine? Whatever it is, the five nice guys from Surprise Chef have been on a roll ever since they were discovered, in terms of constant inspiration, creativity and enthusiasm. And so, on 16 May 2025, the instrumental soul band’s fourth album »Superb« will be released on Big Crown. Between Afro-funk and cinematic soul, between soft ballads, sci-fi synths from the 70s and a good pinch of jazz, the band moves as somnambulistically as it does between the labels retro and timeless.

Precisely imprecise

As a new trick, probably also to keep themselves from getting bored in the studio, they try a new creative approach: while the previous output was still characterised by meticulous arrangements, there is now more spontaneity. On ‘Superb’ there is more room for experimentation, for songs that suddenly mutate from sweet soul to dark funk. »Superb« is available exclusively from HHV Records in a limited Clear Emerald Edition of only 300 copies – so if you can feel Surprise Chef’s groove, act fast.
