Jazz, pop, fusion, ambient, dreamy hippie attitude – Portico Quartet are extremely difficult to categorise, but usually sound fascinating. Since their 2007 album debut »Knee-Deep in the North Sea«, which collided hang drum sounds with dreamy wind instruments and earned the Brits a Mercury Prize nomination, Duncan Bellamy, Jack Wyllie and their cohorts have managed to artfully combine the ingredients mentioned at the beginning and offer a musical home for jazz freethinkers and electronic nerds alike. That wasn’t always the case: between 2013 and 2017, the quartet downsized twice to a trio, the characteristic hang drum was dropped, and as Portico they drifted into electro-pop territory, for example on »Living Fields«, released on Ninja Tune in 2015.A few years ago, they returned to more familiar territory, Portico Quartet sound like they did in the decade – for example on »Memory Streams«, which was released on Gondwana Records in 2019. A few years ago, they returned to more familiar territory, Portico Quartet sound like they did in the decade – for example on »Memory Streams«, which was released on Gondwana Records in 2019. A good sign not only for Portico traditionalists, but also for musical level. On Matthew Halsall’s label also comes the next album “Terrain”, which will be available as exclusive green vinyl at HHV. Release date ist May 28th.
