If anyone holds up the flag for the golden era of hip-hop, it’s Oddisee. Hardly anyone in the past has so consistently delivered music that has been able to warm up a loyal fanbase anew each time. This time it took a little longer: it took six years until the digital release of »To What End« in January 2023. In interviews leading up to the release, Oddisee spoke of how success had pushed him down and how at one point he was ready to seek therapy for help for the first time.
Freshly treated, but always remained troy
Of course, these experiences are reflected in the lyrics of »To What End«, although Oddisee remains true to the warm, round sound to it. »More To Go«, for example: The groove takes you in immediately, hungover horns pump the melody to it. Will the tenth album be the big success for the US rapper? Whatever happens: Here you can hear that Oddisee has thought about it. A reflective album on many levels and yet so fundamentally relaxed.
