With her album »Anadolu Ejderi« (Engl.: Anatolian Dragon), Turkish singer Gaye Su Akyol is coming to Berlin with new music more than four years after her last release. If you want to hear the Anatolian dragon roar not only at home but also live, you should pay a visit to Club Gretchen in Berlin-Kreuzberg on April 4, 2023.
Musically, the Istanbul native shifts between Anatolian folk pop, post-punk, Turkish psychedelic rock, surf, disco as well as African and Middle Eastern melodies. Moreover, Gaye Su Akyol is not only accompanied by classical instruments on her new album, but also by traditional sounds of the fiddle, oud, electric baglama, cümbüş and sazbüş.
A journey through time and space
In her songs, Gaye Su Akyol sings about Turkey’s political climate and recalls the beauty of Istanbul before the coups changed her homeland. On »Anadolu Ejderi«, the musician also addresses the urge for personal and political freedom as well as the expression of sexual identity. Her music has the effect of a time machine on the listener, taking them to places they have never been and at the same time reminding them of everything that was once lost there.
