Strictly speaking, the story of Azymuth begins several years earlier. Back in 1968, Alex Malheiros, Ivan »Mamão« Conti and José Roberto Bertrami met in a nightclub where they were playing in other ensembles that night. They founded the cover band Grupo Seleção, played concerts and became a popular studio band for musicians such as Arthur Verocai, Erasmo Carlos, Gal Costa, Jorge Ben, basically everyone who was a big name in Brazil.
In 1973, they stood in line for Marcos Valle, who had just written the soundtrack for »O fabuloso Fittipaldi«. He calls the group Conjunto Azimuth, which is the starting signal for their own career, which, if you take this event as a starting point, lasts 50 years.
Renato Massa joins as drummer
To mark the occasion, the Brazilian trio wanted to play a few concerts in Europe. The joy was clouded by the sudden death of drummer Ivan Conti in April of this year. After some time of consideration, Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino (who has replaced José Roberto Bertrami, who died in 2012, for years) decided to go on tour anyway, »in tribute to Ivan Conti«. The drummer will be Renato Massa, also a legend in Brazil, Marcos Valle’s favourite drummer, a good friend of »Mamão«, collaborator of Eumir Deodato and Ed Motta.
On June 20, they will perform at Club Gretchen in Berlin. One day later, on June 21, they can be seen live at the Kent Club in Hamburg.
