Kundan Lal? I haven’t had much of a chance to check him out on the record market so far. After all, this is only the second album by Kunsaf Halil aka Kundan Lal. His virtual North African-Indian club music sounds like a pretty sophisticated affair, though. Dub, classic drum machines, ethnic percussion and lots of samples of all kinds of wind instruments come together in his work to create an affair that sounds both highly artificial and yet naturally at peace with itself at the same time. As if someone has been working on his style for a long time.
At this point, the information on the origin of the record starts to get interesting. The field recordings used were all made by Kunsaf Halil himself and recorded in Egypt, Morocco and India. And that was between 1999 and 2005. Which makes it sound as if he took or allowed himself a lot of time with what now reveals itself to the astonished audience as the Kundan Lal music project. In its majestic, serene flow, »Power of Ra« does indeed seem to bear witness to the power of the Egyptian sun god Ra. He seems an extremely gentle god, the way Kundan Lal makes him sound.
