Let’s get it right from the start: Surprise Chef are not your average neo-soul band. Of course, they have also internalised the funk and soul of the seventies, but there is nothing nostalgic about what they make out of it. One would almost like to say that the result is »modern«. They themselves describe their music as »moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk«. Leon Michels flagged it as »cinematic soul«. Giles Peterson says: »Killer«. All of them are right.
Take It, Don’t Leave It
Leon Michael again was the one who released their latest, third album »Education & Recreation« on his Big Crown label last autumn. The five Australians are now touring Europe with it.
