Those who are acquainted with Dinosaur Jr. already know what’s coming next. The veterans of indie-rock still follow the same old path on their tenth album, »I Bet On Sky«. Guitars on top of guitars, before the first rumbling part sets in, reminding the listener of a solo. And still, Dinosaur Jr. manage to not repeat themselves – »I Bet On Sky« appears fresh and new every single minute. Take »Watch The Corners« as an example: No other band would manage to create a track with such carefreeness. »What Was That« also just hangs in the melody and wears it out to the bitter end, while the whole track is shaped by distorted and scruffy guitars. Every note that tries to join a harmony is beaten out of it. »Pierce The Morning Rain« tries to push the rhythm forward, but not more than necessary, because the tracks are not only controlled by guitar-strings, but also by J Mascis’ mushy voice. With »Don’t Pretend You Didn’t Know« Dinosaur Jr. have put one of the best openers of the year – and tracks in general – onto their album. The way the feedback subsides in order to have a half-clear guitar move over the sound – only Dinosaur Jr. could possibly make that as bombastic, yet delicate. All that has nothing to do with a try-hard-youthfulnes. Instead, the trio’s sound just outlives trends and years. »I Bet On Sky« is so very compact, put together in such a lighthearted and amazing manner, that no one really gives a damn!
